The word nutrition first appeared in 1551 and comes from the Latin word nutrire, meaning “to nourish”. Today, we define nutrition as the sum of all processes involved in how organisms obtain nutrients, metabolize them, and use them to support all of life’s processes.

Nutrition is an evidence-based science. Nutritional scientists continuously advance our knowledge of nutrition by building on prior research.

Without adequate nutrition the human body does not function optimally, and severe nutritional inadequacy can lead to disease and even death.

Your ability to wake up, to think clearly, to communicate, to hope, to dream, to go to school, to gain knowledge, to go to work, to earn a living, and to do all of the things that you like to do are dependent upon one factor—your health.

Good health means you are able to function normally and work hard to achieve your goals in life.

The foods we eat contain nutrients.

Nutrients are substances required by the body to perform its basic functions. Nutrients must be obtained from diet, since the human body does not synthesize them. Nutrients are used to produce energy, detect and respond to environmental surroundings, move, excrete wastes, breathe, grow and reproduce.

There are six classes of nutrients required for the body to function and maintain overall health.

These are: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, water, vitamins, and minerals.

Foods also contain nonnutrients that may be harmful (such as cholesterol, dyes, and preservatives) or beneficial (such as antioxidants).

O scurta descriere:

Cuvantul nutritie a aparut pentru prima data in anul 1551 si provine din cuvantul latin nutrire, adica „a hrani”. Astazi, definim nutritia ca suma a tuturor proceselor implicate in modul in care organismele obtin nutrienti, le metabolizeaza si le folosesc pentru a sustine toate procesele vietii.

Nutritia este o stiinta bazata pe dovezi. Oamenii de stiinta imbunatatesc in mod continuu cunostintele noastre despre nutritie cu ajutorul cercetarilor pe care le desfasoara.

Fara o nutritie adecvata, corpul uman nu va functiona optim; o insuficienta nutritionala severa poate conduce catre boala si chiar la deces.

Abilitatea de a te trezi, de a gandi clar, de a comunica, de a spera, de a visa, de a merge la scoala, de a castiga cunostinte, de a merge la munca, de a castiga existenta si de a face toate lucrurile pe care dumneavoastra va doriti si va plac sa le faceti sunt dependente de un factor – sanatatea.

Sa fi sanatos inseamna sa fi capabil sa „functionezi” in mod normal si sa muncesti din greu pentru a-ti atinge obiectivele in viata.

Alimentele pe care le consumam contin substante nutritive.

Nutrientii sunt substante necesare organismului sa il ajute sa isi indeplineasca functiile de baza. Acestia se obtin din dieta, deoarece organismul uman nu le sintetizeaza. Nutrientii sunt utilizati pentru a produce energie, pentru a detecta si raspunde mediului inconjurator, pentru a elimina rezidurile, pentru a respira, a creste si a se reproduce.

Exista 6 clase de substante nutritive necesare organismului pentru a functiona si a mentine sanatatea generala:

Acestea sunt: glucide (carbohidrati), lipide (grasimi), proteine, apa, vitaminele si sarurile minerale.

Alimentele contin si non-nutrienti care pot fi daunatori (cum ar fi: colesterolul, colorantii si conservantii)  dar si benefici (cum ar fi: antioxidantii).
